  Building The Future Hackathon

Building The Future is where technology, leadership and education meet to empower people and organizations through a 100% digital experience.

Since its first edition, Building the Future established itself as Portugal’s greatest digital transformation event, returning in 2021 to build the vision, the strategy, the foundations and the code necessary to create the future.

This year, we thought that you too should have an impact on building the future, so we teamed up with GalpGoWithFlow and Microsoft to create the Building The Future Hackathon

GoWithFlow, the first independent startup spun out of Galp, works closely with Galp Innovation and Commercial teams to bring its innovative solutions to Galp customers and other businesses working towards sustainable mobility.

The Challenge

We’re living in a world that is constantly changing and the challenges that we are currently facing require bold ideas empowered by technology. 2020 was a tough year and in 2021 we will need, more than ever, inspiring and innovative ideas that can push the boundaries of technology to help us create a better world.

In this Hackathon, we’re challenging you and your team to be bold and come up with innovative solutions on Electric Mobility in one of the following areas:

Exploit the potential of V2G/V2H applications

Vehicle to grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) are grid-edge technologies that enable the energy stored in electric vehicles to be fed back into the grid (or home). From the grid point of view this can add flexibility by helping to supply energy at times of peak demand or perform other grid services that enhance the system stability. It can also be associated with decentralized energy systems promoting the integration of renewables in the grid. From the home point of view the applications are mainly on behind-the-meter services and tariff optimization mechanisms.

Galp is an integrated mobility solution supplier and, for us, this is very interesting  as we see V2G as a next step in electric mobility in which we were a pioneer in Portugal. It’s an opportunity to develop new business models around mobility and provide benefits for customers by turning cars, which are 90% of time parked, into sources of revenue.

Engaging microgrid and e-mobility users to share data on profiles and patterns

Transition to a sustainable electrical system involving significant integration of renewable energy sources is disruptive and requires innovative ways to design, organize and operate. That’s where microgrids come into play linking electrical loads and distributed generation sources and being able to operate connected to the grid or autonomously.

This new way of operating relies heavily on intelligent control systems and reinforces the importance of data from which you can optimize the system and opens possibility to new business models. In the other hand for business value to be maximized, it is critical that individuals share data on their behaviours and consumption patterns. The interest for Galp is in the creation of business models that leverage on the value of data for delivering new services at no marginal cost to the end user.

Designing the right infrastructure for shared electric mobility from bikes to cars

Many cities have embraced the concepts of mobility sharing and/or micro-mobility in the transition towards smarter and cleaner mobility. However, many initiatives have failed either on the lack of right incentives or the “too high” costs of infrastructure and/or operational requirements. Could shared physical infrastructures (and related services) exist to fulfil the high requirements of service uptime and availability and lower costs among operators?

Blockchain for Mobility - disruptive applications

Blockchain has been around for a while now and after an initial hype on the subject, it has not yet managed to be as widespread and disruptive as initially expected. Is there a specific urban mobility application where the use of blockchain is a “must” and a business differentiator? What would be the service to be deployed within that context?

Surprise Us

Do you believe you have a brand-new idea in the electric mobility field worth developing? We trust you. Make it happen and impress us!

You will have a chance to bring your idea to life with your teammates and develop a project using Microsoft Azure. This is the platform in which you must build your solution, but don't worry, we will give you the proper tools to do it (including Microsoft Azure Credits).

And, of course, to win the prizes available including a 1st Winner prize of 3,000 Euros!

Who can apply?

Anyone from all around the world! University students, newly graduated, professionals, experienced innovators or entrepreneurs.

The registration is individual and teams of 3 to 5 people should be formed.

How to participate?

1. First, you need to create your account on TAIKAI. This is the platform where we will be hosting the Hackathon, and where you will be uploading documents and completing your project page and profile. Once you do it, you'll be able to complete your individual registration by filling out the registration form (link).

2. Form your team or join an existing one through the TAIKAI matchmaking process.

3. Get together on Microsoft Teams to analyse and discuss your ideas with the help of mentors. You will soon receive an email with your credentials to access MS Teams.

  • Don´t forget to submit your project by the 4th March. Make sure you check all the deliverables.

4. If your project is among the 10 best ideas, your team will be a finalist and compete for the prize against the other 9 teams during the Development phase which will last one full week.

5. Submit your project and the expected deliverables by the end of the development stage.

6. Create and present your pitch to the jury in the final event.

7. Win the prize!
