<p>ETH Oxford is a 3-day blockchain hackathon between March 8 - March 11 bringing together the best builders of web3 alongside talented developers at the beginning of their developer journey. <strong>The hackathon is </strong><em><strong>100% free of charge for hackers. </strong></em></p><p>Builders and hackers interested in launching startups in the web3 space are also invited to <a href="https://home-dao.com/apply" target="_blank">apply to join HomeDAO</a> - the university for web3 founders.</p><p>Apply to join the hack <a href="http://tinyurl.com/ethoxford-tix" target="_blank">here</a>.</p><h2>Categories</h2><p>The hackathon will be centred around five main categories. We will engage with our developer community to distil the following list of candidate categories to the final ones: </p><ul><li>Zero-Knowledge, Privacy and Compliance</li><li>Oracles, Identity, Real-World Assets (RWA) and RealFi</li><li>Decentralised Finance (DeFi)</li><li>Decentralised Social Media and Gaming</li><li>AI, Account Abstraction and Emerging Ideas</li></ul><p>Remember: you are <strong>NOT allowed </strong>to start coding on your submission before the official start time. Any submissions featuring singular large commits will be treated as attempts to cheat and will be disqualified. Submissions that have already been submitted to other hackathons will not be allowed. Anyone is allowed to issue a challenge to a submission if they have good reason to believe that the project team has broken any rules. </p><h2>Who is this for? </h2><p>This is a hackathon for veteran web3 builders, current university students and developers looking to get into blockchain development. We welcome all experience levels and will actively seek to put beginners together with more veteran builders. </p><h2>Venue</h2><p>ETH Oxford will be taking place at the University of Oxford's <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/AQQQ9yYsqseEmkdAA" target="_blank">Mathematical Institute</a>. The Main Venue will be open 24/7 and only be accessible by ETH Oxford participants. Side events will take place at other locations in Oxford. You can learn more about all venues <a href="https://ethoxford.io/#venues" target="_blank">here</a>.</p><h2>Schedule</h2><p>Arrival registration for ETH Oxford opens at 1 pm on Friday 8th at the <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/eJfJSS1iRuQHvz4Q6" target="_blank">Main Venue</a>, followed by the opening ceremony, technical workshops, and networking sessions. Saturday features a midnight spikeball competition (2 am), a morning yoga session at University parks and additional lunch workshops. Cold plunge at the HomeDAO HQ jacuzzi is also an option for the hardcore Vikings out there. Sunday begins with yoga and breakfast served at the main venue, or cold morning plunge at the HomeDAO jacuzzi, for those who prefer a refreshing start to the last day. Any dietary requests submitted in the application/registration form will be taken into consideration. We aim to get back to you with either a waitlist or acceptance decision within 3 working days. </p><p><strong>Why do we require a deposit? </strong>To manage our waitlist appropriately, we require a small deposit (authorization to hold). Because it is a great incentive to get people committed to attend and submit a project by the end. </p><p><strong>Why not use crypto staking like ETH Global?</strong> We expect to have a significant portion of developers not yet familiar with blockchain and crypto in attendance so we want to make this as accessible as possible for this audience as well. </p><p><strong>Can I participate as a solo hacker? </strong>Yes of course! However, we will actively do match-making so that developers or people with zero to little blockchain development experience are paired up with more experienced developers. Teams are limited to a maximum of 4 people. </p><p><strong>Do all team members have to attend in person?</strong> We believe that the most value comes from participating in person. All participating members must be present to present on Sunday to be eligible for prizes. There's a separate application process for these slots. We've gathered the most common transportation methods. You will find more options and details <a href="https://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/about-us/travel-maps" target="_blank">here</a>.</p><p><em>From London by train</em></p><p>There are direct trains from London Paddington and London Marylebone to Oxford Train Station departing several times per day. An “Open Return” ticket allows you to travel by <u>any</u> route between the specified locations on the day, and return within 1 month. You can buy tickets directly <a href="https://www.gwr.com/" target="_blank">here</a> for Great Western, and <a href="https://www.chilternrailways.co.uk/london-oxford-train" target="_blank">here</a> for the slower but cheaper alternative Chiltern Railways. </p><p><em>From London by bus</em></p><p>For those on a budget, we recommend the Oxford Tube. A student and young-person return ticket costs £17. The bus leaves from Victoria Station with several stops in London on its journey to Oxford. The buses operate 24/7. You can book tickets <a href="https://www.oxfordtube.com/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p><p><em>From Heathrow airport</em></p><p>Busses from Heathrow to Oxford take about 1 hour and 40 minutes and depart once every 20 minutes during regular hours. The buses are fully equipped with Wi-Fi and air conditioning. We recommend you pre-book tickets online at least 24 hours before. Tickets are valid on any Airline coach on the day. You can book tickets <a href="https://www.theairlineoxford.co.uk/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p><p><em>From Gatwick airport</em></p><p>Busses from Gatwick to Oxford take about 2 hours and 30 minutes and depart once every 20 minutes during regular hours. <h2>What is ETH Oxford?</h2><p>ETH Oxford is a blockchain hackathon for builders looking to build generation-defining decentralised applications. </p><p><br /></p><h2>Who can attend ETH Oxford 2024?</h2><p>ETH Oxford is targeted at creative minds with a hacker spirit. We don't just want blockchain engineers. Developers familiar with traditional software stacks are more than welcome! We also strongly believe that every team needs people who can research to understand the market, can present, and can design intuitive UI/UX. <span>We will also have low-code/no-code options for people with less blockchain experience. </span></p><p><br /></p><h2>How are applicants selected?</h2><p>ETH Oxford curators aim at selecting the best, most participative and motivated, programmers and creatives. For this they rely on what candidates fill in their profiles. What matters is your potential and your passion for technology, no matter your level of experience.</p><p><br /></p><h2>How much does it cost?</h2><p>ETH Oxford is <em>100% free</em> for all approved hackers. However, a small deposit is required to help us manage our waitlist and attendee list.</p><p><br /></p><h2>I was accepted but have a conflict so I can't attend, what do I do?</h2><p>Please let us know via ethoxford@home-dao.com and we will return your deposit provided that you inform us on time. </p><p><br /></p><h2>Can I register our team in bulk?</h2><p>No. Candidates must register and apply individually (they are evaluated and selected individually too, see above).</p><p><br /></p><h2>Do you provide scholarships for attendees' transportation or VISA? </h2><p>No, but we can provide a VISA letter.</p><p><br /></p><h2>Can I bring a guest to the event?</h2><p>No. All attendees must apply to the event individually.</p><p><br /></p><h2>Is there food and beverages at the event?</h2><p>Food and drinks will be provided free for all attendees. We'll be providing lunch and dinner daily, and there will be random snacks and beverages available 24/7.</p><p><br /></p><h2>Should I arrange for a place to stay?</h2><p>Hackers can choose to stay the night at the venue, sleeping in sleeping bags or such. Our napping rooms will have a capacity of about 150 hackers. These rooms will be stashed with bean bags, mattresses, pillows and blankets. There will be one napping room for non-male-identifying individuals. But if this is not your thing, you have many accommodation options elsewhere around. We let all hackers stay overnight at the Main Venue on the night of the 8th (Fri) and the 9th (Sat)</p><p><br /></p><h2>Are there hotels nearby?</h2><p>ETH Oxford is in a very central location in the city, so there are plenty of hotels around. We are in the process of securing discount codes from partner hotels in the city.</p><h2><strong>What’s the best transport to Oxford?</strong> </h2><p>If you are arriving by flight, Heathrow (1h20m to Oxford by bus) is usually the best in terms of time, and often overall cost. Gatwick is second (2h20m by bus) and has many budget airline connections. Luton (2.5h by bus) and Stansted (3h+) lack good direct connections to Oxford, but may be the most affordable if you are willing to spend the time on buses/trains!</p><h2>Is there Wi-Fi at the event?</h2><p>Of course. Students will be able to connect via Eduroam. All other users will be able to access high-speed guest WiFi provided by the Mathematical Institute. </p><p><br /></p><h2>I am interested in exhibiting or becoming a sponsor, what do I do?</h2><p>If you are interested in sponsoring ETH Oxford, please contact <a href="mailto:simon@home-dao.com" target="_blank">simon@home-dao.com</a> and we'll take it from there.</p><p><br /></p><h2>I'm a tech guy but I also do recruiting. Is it OK if I talk to someone at ETH Oxford 2024 to see if they're interested in working with me?</h2><p>You cannot engage in direct recruitment activities during ETH Oxford 2024. This is one of the core rules of the event. The attendees don't enjoy unsolicited targeting, and we don't want to turn the event into a battlefield for hires. Trust us, it's better for you, not only for attendees. Having said this, it's OK if the interest is mutual and both parties want to talk (meaning the attendee approaches you). It's definitely NOT OK if you're preaching to the crowd or fishing around for interest.</p><p><br /></p><h2><strong>When will the deposit be refunded?</strong></h2><p>The deposit made during registration will be refunded after the hackathon after your participation has been confirmed.</p><p><br /></p><h2><strong>I Need Help with the Hack</strong></h2><p>This is a <a href="https://forms.gle/j1TD8UimrJx3rngh7" target="_blank">form</a> hackers can use to request help from ETH Oxford mentors. Builders compete by submitting projects to Main Tracks, Sponsor Bounties, or both! </p><h3>Main Track</h3><p>There will be 5 main track categories at ETH Oxford. </p><p>Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKP), Privacy and Compliance</p><p>Real-World Assets (RWA), Oracles and Identity</p><p>Decentralised Finance (DeFi)</p><p>Decentralised Social Media and Gaming</p><p>Wildcard Category: AI, Account Abstraction, Interoperability, Blockchain Research and other.</p><p>Sponsors who have already decided their winners will be given the opportunity to announce their winners at the Gala Dinner Pre-drinks event at Exeter College Fellows Garden, March 11th, 5:30 pm - 6:45 pm UTC.</p><p>Submissions and judging of Main Track projects occur on the <strong>Taikai platform.</strong></p><h3>Sponsor Bounties</h3><p>Each sponsor of ETH Oxford set up bounties for builders to compete for. Sponsors typically define the scope of submissions and marking criteria. Sponsors have sole discretion over the bounties. Builders can submit the same project to <em>several </em>Sponsor Bounties. Builders are also encouraged to submit their projects to one of the Main Tracks. </p><p>Submissions to <strong>Sponsor Bounties and Judging </strong>is managed on the <a href="http://mintycode.io/hackathon/eth-oxford" target="_blank">Mintycode</a> platform. </p>
