On average, 2.6 million passengers per day use the Wiener Linien network, for which our public transport vehicles cover a distance of 214,000 kilometres &ndash; roughly the same distance as orbiting the earth 5 times.&nbsp; The ChallengeAll public transport in Vienna uses a gateless (ticketing) system. Passengers can enter and exit stations, busses, trams and trains without validating their tickets each time. Tickets are checked by personnel in stations and vehicles. The time it takes to check a ticket is essential, as ticket inspectors try to check as many tickets on board as possible between two stops. A second method is when multiple inspectors stand at station exits, inspecting all passengers leaving a station. In this case speed is required to prevent long waiting times and overcrowding. Tickets come in various forms: from paper, over cards to digital tickets on mobile phones using our &ldquo;WienMobil&rdquo; app. Over the last couple of years, digital tickets have become more and more popular, which comes with a challenge for the process of our ticket inspection. Currently, mobile digital tickets, embedded in the &ldquo;WienMobil&rdquo; app, are being checked via visual inspection. Trained inspectors are able to confirm a valid ticket within one to three seconds. Experience shows, on average it takes passengers up to ten times longer to provide their digital ticket for inspection in comparison to hardcopy versions. The process of showing a ticket on a mobile phone simply takes too many steps versus showing a hardcopy version to be just as time efficient. The challenge is to create a prototype to validate digital tickets as fast as possible, starting after the passenger locates their phone. We aim to improve both smooth operation and ticket validation as well as passenger experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;Framework for the challenge<ul style="list-style-type: disc;margin-left:undefined;"><li>Ticket inspectors use Android phones</li><li>No additional technical infrastructure in stations or vehicles&nbsp;</li><li>Backend servers are available</li><li>Passengers may use different phones and systems</li><li>The solution must be GDPR conform</li><li>No use of passenger GPS location necessary (no GPS coverage in underground stations)</li><li>Inspector&rsquo;s phone is online</li><li>Passenger&rsquo;s phone can be offline when the ticket is checked</li><li>Tickets should not be transferable&nbsp;</li><li>Possibility to log the amount of tickets checked</li></ul>ParticipantsStudents, graduates, experienced developers are all equally welcome to participate in the challenge. Form teams with up to five members or find team members on TAIKAI during the application phase. Do I need to pay any money to register for the hackathon? No. You do not have to pay anything to anyone to register yourself for the hackathon. Do I need to have any specific qualifications to be a participant for the Hackathon? If you love to code or like to make user experience better, you are more than welcome to participate in the hackathon. As this challenge is related to developing mobile based applications, a background in mobile programming will be helpful. How do I submit what I have made for the hackathon? You have to develop the entire software application on your local system and when you are done, send it to Wiener Linien via email as ZIP file format, along with instructions to run the application and source code. Note that this must happen before the participation phase ends! Do we need to have the entire idea fully working? The entire idea need not be fully implemented beforehand, however, it will be helpful to have your idea sufficiently ready, such that it can be reviewed by the judges. How is the environment? Will your environment support any language? Will you provide any IDE or DB for us to work on ideas? You have to develop the entire software application on your local system. No resources will be provided by Wiener Linien. Are there any restrictions on using number of pre-built libraries? The used technologies or libraries should be freely available. It is possible to use licensed components, if they are available under a free plan in order to evaluate your solution. However, relying too much on such components may affect judgement. Do I need to give a demo for the product that I have built? You will be required to make a video for your unique solution. You will have to upload a video (or similar presentation) to your project page of the challenge before the end of the participation phase. A fully developed application needs to have a solid backend. How shall we do this? For this challenge, you should use simulated data. This data can come from an &quot;in-memory&quot; stub, or some equivalent self-built simulator running on the same machine. Who will own the IP(Intellectual Property) Rights to the product that I/we have built? You will keep your intellectual property rights for what you build. This hackathon brought up many impressive ideas on solutions an great presentation videos, all jury members were  very impressed by the work of the participants. All participants who have their project accepted for the hackathon will receive 200 Google cloud credits at the beginning of the innovation phase.
