  • Challenge #2: Tracking and preventing water pollution

Description

THE IDEA:

Water pollution presents a persistent environmental, public‑health, and economic risk. Although monitoring technologies exist, pollution events are frequently identified only after adverse effects have materialised. This limits the effectiveness of response measures.

The critical limitation is the lack of early warning. Most existing systems are reactive and do not support preventive intervention.

WaterShield is a real‑time water pollution monitoring and early‑warning system. It continuously observes rivers, lakes, and coastal waters in order to detect early anomalies that may indicate emerging pollution threats.

By combining near real‑time satellite observations with historical data analysis and machine‑learning‑based pattern detection, WaterShield enables timely, evidence‑based decision‑making and supports proactive water protection.

EU SPACE TECHNOLOGIES:

WaterShield is built exclusively on European Union space data and services.

Copernicus Sentinel‑2 multispectral imagery is used to monitor inland and coastal water bodies and detect changes in water surface characteristics associated with potential pollution events.

Historical Copernicus datasets support baseline environmental modelling and long‑term trend analysis.

Galileo positioning and timing services ensure accurate geolocation, temporal consistency, and reliable alert generation.

EU SPACE FOR WATER:

WaterShield addresses the Early Detection and Monitoring of Water Pollution #2 Challenge.

The solution improves water resource protection by enabling early risk detection, enhancing situational awareness, and supporting timely response actions. This contributes to reduced environmental impact and more effective water management practices.
