Here in the 4th Cassini Hackathon Barcelona Spain an Environmental, social and corporate governance network has born: Welcome to Byetek.
What is the problem?
As an investor, it is extremely difficult to generate consistent alpha over time. ESG has provided large institutional investors a lever to align with the values of the beneficiaries of the investments (pension holders and governments) and at the same time generate a premium in returns.
The delivery of the ESG premium relies on access to quality data for the selection of investments. But most of the market participants rely on the same information which reduces the advantage in generating alpha. The opportunity to access satellite data to assess the ESG footprint of companies independently and reliably represents a tremendous opportunity.

We are confident that the creation of a platform that can evaluate the quality of air or water around the production premises of public (understood as listed) corporations would be of great value not only to corporations but to the investors in these. Investors need alternative sources of data to guarantee resilience to the inherent ESG risks in their investments.
A different niche of discretionary investors could also rely on this data more opportunistically placing bets and profiting from weaknesses in the environmental and social policies of a corporation.
In both cases, independent of the incentives, the benefitted is the planet. The data is what enables investors to exert pressure on companies to act as good citizens, comply with regulations and contribute to a healthy planet. The access or lack of access to capital is the best incentive system for transformational change toward climate action.
To build this product there is a need for access to satellite images. On the other side, there is a need to collect information on the GPS location of the production centers of the companies. Some of this information might be public, but it could also prove difficult to access. Focusing on a specific market segment with increased levels of data availability (e.g. oil companies) might be the best course of action.
