Description

People are fleeing their homes in search for a better life on a daily basis. As a result, migration and refugee influxes continue to be one of the main challenges faced by the European Union.

Journeys through the sea are particularly dangerous, and people often rely on smugglers hoping to reach a European country. In 2022, an estimated number of 2,062 refugees died while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

European Space Technology, such as Copernicus and Galileo Analysis (Satellite Imagery and Tracking Analysis) could offer an extremely useful tool in monitoring refugee and migration influxes in the European Union.

SeaGuar aims to develop a methodology for using European Space Technology to help human lives on the move, while identifying and tackling the main migration routes in the Mediterranean Sea.

 SeaGuard's main products are:

  1. Application for Migrants and Refugees in emergency need (Galileo Data)
  2. Weekly Indications on migration routes in the Mediterranean Sea (Copernicus Analysis)
  3. Monthly Reports for International, European and Local NGOs

SeaGuard aims to cooperate with some of the main NGOs in the migration field, such as the Cyprus Refugee Council and IASIS, to identify the need of refugees on the move. In addition, SeaGuard aims to cooperate with companies such as Cloud Signals, offering Internet coverage in sea waters.
