Rooft: Connecting Communities, Forests, and Investments

Rooft aims to make a reforesting and afforesting recommendation using Earth observation data, connect social forestry initiatives, and provide end-to-end knowledge about the situation of forest.

Rooft: aims to make a reforesting and afforesting recommendation using Earth observation data, connect social forestry initiatives, and provide end-to-end knowledge about the situation of forests.

  1. Problem

    1. According to Global Forest Watch, from 2001 to 2021, there was a total of 437Mha of tree cover loss globally, equivalent to an 11% decrease in tree cover since 2000 and 174Gt of CO₂ emissions.
    2. By this local communities can't participate if they don't have enough of money to launch a reforestation action, they can't go to the bank to fund. They Need a trusted platform where they can expose their current asset and based on their location get funds.
  2. Impact

    1. On the other hand, COP27 in Egypt resulted in countries delivering a package of decisions that reaffirmed their commitment to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The cover decision, known as the Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan, highlights that a global transformation to a low-carbon economy is expected to require investments of at least USD 4-6 trillion a year. Delivering such funding will require a swift and comprehensive transformation of the financial system and its structures and processes, engaging governments, central banks, commercial banks, institutional investors, and other financial actors.
  3. Solution
    1. Given the problems that are facing our planet, the fast way to raise finance with no/fewer upfront fees is to go through crowdfunding. That is why want to connect communities (locals / national/global), forests, and investment. It is more suitable for local communities to get funding legally through our Rooft platform instead of waiting for funding from the government or the bank.
    2. Rooft is a trusted platform for local communities to take an action and help the planet to be healthier at its low level. If we do a summation of all local contributions to reforestation, this will decrease the carbon stock (CO2 emission will be absorbed by the forest)
    3. Rooft will advertise projects from different classes of society, and then people will know more about the area of each one. It is a marketing tool itself for the project and forest to be rehabilitated.

  4. Business Model/Execution

    1. Premium Plan: 1 – 10% of platform fee for each successful investment
    2. Project integration: Integrate with conservation projects
    3. Capacity building: training and certification
  5. Achievement

    1. The use case we have been focused on is the recommendation for rehabilitation we use NDVI class for land areas and the mangrove health index for mangrove areas. For that, we have designed two tools in the toolbox, valuation of forest stand based on the carbon stock and time-series forest monitoring using NDVI
    2. We have started building a dashboard for crowdfunding purposes.
      1. Investment Forest: with a range selection based on Area, Carbon stock, Investment target, and the Vegetation Index (NDVI)
      2. My workspace: this is where the users(investor/owner) should make calculations about investment in their project-based his on location hectare price, carbon stock, and hectare area
      3. The support area is to help user to get funding based on good criteria for funding.
  6. Team

    1. The team is made up of
      1. Bayangmbe Mounmo: Software developer
      2. Safran Yusri: GIS, Remote Sensing developer
      3. Nikhil Bollineni: Data analytic
