“A GNSS LEVERAGING DEVICE WITH EMERGENCY POWER SYSTEM FOR SURVIVOR GEOPOSITIONING DURING MARITIME AND NATURAL DISASTER”
Solution and Use case
- What is the problem you are trying to solve?
- Because of its geographic location, Southeast Asia is vulnerable to natural and maritime disasters. As a result of proactive thinking, our team proposes our device to reduce the cost, time, and increase the success rate of rescue operations during maritime and natural disasters.
- An example use case : A marine vessel that has no clear visibility on the seas and no way to be identified had a technical or engine failures during a storm. With the help of our device, rescuers can obtain an accurate geolocation of the vessel to rescue them quickly and efficiently.
- How can your solution be used to solve this problem?
- At a certain distance, our solution/device will establish a communication channel for both the rescuer (receiver) and the survivor (transmitter). The survivor will be able to broadcast their geolocation using the GNSS signal received by their (transmitter) device. Because telecommunication services are prone to failure during maritime and natural disasters, the improved and emergency communication channel will be independent of them.
- How does your solution work?
- Our solution works by gathering GNSS signals through the survivor's device (transmitter) and broadcasting them over a radio frequency so that nearby rescuers (receivers) who can capture the signal can determine the survivor's geolocation. It will also include the survivor's timestamps so that rescuers can plot the changes of the survivor's geolocation (if there is movement) and make predictions about their direction of movement.
- Why is your solution unique?
- Our solution is unique because it has an emergency power system by incorporating solar panels and hand cranking generators on the transmitter device, allowing it to last longer. The survivor's transmitter device can also send short messages in addition to the geolocation, so they can send their landmarks, situation, and names, which will aid rescuers in locating them. It is accomplished through an easy-to-use user interface with a touchscreen capability, which can be turned off once the short messages have been recorded in order to save energy.
Use of GNSS
To receive GNSS signals, our device will employ u-blox GNSS modules. The received signals on the transmitter will be broadcasted on a radio frequency so that nearby rescuers’ receiver device that can capture the signal will know the survivor's geolocation with a time stamp. The data gathered can then be used to graph the survivor's movement (if there is any) and predict its direction of movement.
Specific use of Galileo
The Galileo High Accuracy Service will be a great use of our product. This will allow our device's users to have more accurate and precise records of their geolocation data gathered via GNSS signals.
Market potential
- What is your customer segment?
- Marine Transportation Industry
- Aviation Industry
- Disaster Risk Reduction Organization
- What is the total addressable market (TAM)?
- Both transmitter and receiver cost around 25,000 Pesos or 500 USD (pair).
- According to a UNCTAD, in early 2020, the total world fleet amounted to 98,140 ships of 100 gross tons and above, equivalent to 2,061,944,484 DWT of capacity.
- In Marine Transporation Industry segment, the TAM is estimated to be 2,453,500,000 Pesos or 49,070,000 USD.
- According to Statista, global aircraft fleet fell to 23,715 aircraft in service worldwide in 2021 due to the coronavirus outbreak.
- In Aviation Industry segment, the estimated TAM is 59,2875,000 Pesos or 11,857,500 USD.
- Calculating the Overall TAM value of the preceding industries.
- The Overall TAM Value is 3,046,375,000 Pesos or 60,927,500 USD.
- Approximately 3 Billion Pesos or 61 million USD.
Innovation factor
- What is new and innovative about your solution?
- The product or service. Our product is innovative because it can provide our end users their geolocation in high accuracy especially when Galileo High Accuracy Service will be utilized. It also has an emergency power system, so it can operate for longer periods of time. We also added a user interface for the survivor so that they can see their exact location and use it to their advantage, especially if they have a map. During search and rescue operations, the survivor can also send short messages that can assist rescuers.
- Where does it add value to existing market offers? How does your product/service places itself in the big picture of the market?
- Our product adds value in the existing market offers by: (1) longer-lasting operability, (2) short-messages capability, and (3) higher accuracy of geolocationing using Galileo. To position our product, we will do Kano analysis and use other analysis tools to different segments of our users to create other variations which will fit to their needs. We will also introduce and further develop the defining features of our product in the market.
Technical back-end
- How do you plan to develop the technical back-end of your solution?
- We will continue to improve the product’s signal range, energy efficiency, and overall casing design so that it can withstand even harsh environments. We will accomplish this by developing various CAD models, circuits, and casings, as well as testing various prototypes in various situations and environments where the product will be commonly used.
- How will you ensure that the GNSS-related requirements (e.g. accuracy) for your solution are achieved?
- We will collaborate with various GNSS receiver manufacturers to test the compatibility and capabilities of their various models with our product. We will run the product through various test scenarios and environments in which it could be used then collect data and design models to adapt with the specific working conditions.
- Which technologies will you use?
- On our initial prototype, we are currently using u-blox modules for our receivers. One of the primary functions of our product will be radio wave communications. For emergency power backup system , we will use solar panels and hand crank generators. We are also developing a user interface for our end-users.
- Have you developed any initial demo or technical solution?
- Yes, as a proof of concept, we created an initial prototype. We successfully gathered the survivor's device's geolocation data and transmitted it to the rescuer's device with the added short message capability.
