Description
Accessing healthcare in Kenya presents significant challenges, especially for those residing in rural areas. As of 2021, approximately 72% of the population lived outside urban centers, leading to costly and time-consuming journeys for medical care. Quality healthcare services are largely concentrated in urban areas, making accessibility a growing concern for rural populations.
Compounding the issue, Kenya faces a severe shortage of healthcare professionals. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a country should have 23 health professionals per 10,000 people. In 2020, Kenya had only 63,580 registered nurses for its 55.6 million citizens, a number well below WHO recommendations. Furthermore, the country had just 12,792 registered physicians, which falls significantly short of meeting the healthcare needs of the population.
The scarcity of specialized care in rural regions has led to overcrowding in the limited medical facilities available and a higher mortality rate, contributing to a complex healthcare challenge
AFYAPP is a cutting-edge healthcare solution that leverages blockchain technology to securely manage and share medical records. Our platform empowers patients, doctors, and healthcare providers by ensuring data privacy, integrity, and accessibility.
Key Features:
Secure Medical Records: Patients can upload their medical records, which are encrypted and stored on a blockchain. This ensures that sensitive medical information remains private and tamper-proof.
Doctor-Patient Collaboration: Patients can grant access to their records to trusted healthcare providers, streamlining the consultation and treatment process.
Efficient Appointment Scheduling: Patients can request appointments with doctors, and doctors can approve or reschedule, all within the platform.
Automatic Image Rendering: Patients can upload medical images, and our system automatically converts the image hash into a viewable format for healthcare providers.
Decentralized Identity: Patients have full control over their healthcare data and can manage access permissions, providing peace of mind and compliance with data privacy regulations. AFYAPP revolutionizes healthcare record management, making medical data accessible, secure, and efficient for all stakeholders. Join us in shaping the future of healthcare with blockchain technology.
Feasibility: The roadmap for developing and implementing the project involves several key steps to ensure technical, financial, and logistical feasibility. Firstly, we will focus on building a robust blockchain-based platform that securely manages medical records. This will require a dedicated team of blockchain developers, cybersecurity experts, and healthcare professionals to design and develop the system. Financially, we plan to secure initial funding through a combination of grants, private investors, and partnerships with healthcare institutions and organizations interested in improving healthcare accessibility in Kenya. This funding will cover the costs of development, testing, and initial deployment.
Impact: The decentralized identity and data control features of AFYAPP empower patients to manage access permissions, ensuring their data privacy and compliance with regulations. This not only builds trust among patients but also aligns with global trends toward patient-centric healthcare. Furthermore, the efficient appointment scheduling and automatic image rendering features streamline the healthcare process, saving time and resources for both patients and healthcare providers. In the long run, the project can contribute to improving healthcare outcomes, reducing healthcare costs, and fostering economic growth by creating a more efficient and accessible healthcare system in Kenya and potentially serving as a model for other African nations facing similar challenges.
UTU was leveraged to implement a feedback and review system where patients and healthcare providers can rate and review each other after consultations or interactions. UTU can help aggregate and verify this feedback, providing a reliable source of information for other users. This can be particularly important for patients looking for reputable healthcare providers and vice versa, promoting transparency and trust within the platform making UTU an integral part of the project.
