  • Challenge #2: Tracking and preventing water pollution

Description

💎 Idea

Europe is currently facing an escalating water quality crisis. In places like the Oslo Fjord, agricultural runoff, specifically the loss of expensive nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers during heavy rainfall, is causing severe eutrophication, toxic algae blooms, and the collapse of marine ecosystems. Simultaneously, farmers operate on incredibly tight profit margins, and when unexpected rain washes away their expensive fertilizer, they suffer a direct financial hit and reduced crop yields.

Senetra is an early-warning, software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform designed to solve this crisis before it ever occurs. By integrating satellite Earth observation data with site-specific meteorological forecasts, our platform identifies high-risk fertilization windows. We provide an automated "Early Warning System" that alerts farmers to withhold fertilizer when the soil is already saturated and heavy rain is imminent. By shifting from reactive water monitoring to predictive pollution prevention, Senetra aligns the financial interests of the farmer with the environmental mandates of the government.

🛰️ EU space technologies

Our platform relies heavily on Copernicus Earth Observation Data, specifically utilizing Sentinel-1 and global models to extract the Soil Water Index (SWI).

This data acts as the core of our predictive algorithm. The SWI indicates the water saturation levels in the top layers of the soil; if the soil is already at 90% saturation, it cannot absorb liquid fertilizer. By leveraging this EU space data, we can accurately predict runoff risk without needing to manufacture or deploy expensive physical IoT sensors in the fields or rivers. This allows for infinite scalability and near-zero additional costs per new user.

💧 EU Space for Water

We are directly solving Challenge #2: Tracking and preventing water pollution, and also direclty appliacable to the other of the Hackathon cases.

While current market solutions focus on reactive water quality monitoring (measuring pollution after it happens) or precision yield tracking (telling farmers how much to fertilize), Senetra sits uniquely in the middle. We use space data to tell farmers when it is ecologically unsafe to fertilize. By predicting and preventing agricultural runoff, our platform reduces government cleanup costs, protects vulnerable aquaculture ecosystems from toxic water influxes, and stops pollution at the source.

🤼 Team

We have the exact complementary operational triangle this challenge demands:

  • Thea Marie Stendal-Karlsen (CTO / Tech Lead)
1st Year IT & Information Systems. Thea developed our lightweight, 100% client-side visual prototype that operates reliably without backend server dependencies.
  • Adrian Huus (COO/CMO / Strategy & Marketing)
3rd Year Marketing & Management. Adrian drives user adoption and effective market segmentation, ensuring the product is framed as a vital financial protection tool for farmers.
  • Andreas Kirkeng (CEO / Commercial & Finance)
3rd Year Business & Administration. Andreas built the rigorous financial model and highly profitable SaaS framework based on B2G and B2B pricing strategies.
