  • Challenge #2: Tracking and preventing water pollution

Description

💎 Idea

WaterGrid addresses the lack of real-time monitoring of anthropic impact on water resources near rivers and floodplains. Illegal excavation, water turbidity changes and land disturbance often go undetected until significant damage occurs.

Our solution uses satellite imagery to automatically detect anthropogenic anomalies and generate alerts. By combining multi-temporal analysis and change detection, WaterGrid provides actionable insights for authorities, enabling faster intervention and more sustainable water resource management.

🛰️ EU space technologies

WaterGrid leverages Earth observation data from Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8/9 missions.

Sentinel-2 provides high-resolution optical imagery for detecting water surface changes, turbidity variations, and land disturbance near rivers and floodplains. Landsat 8/9 adds long-term historical data, enabling WaterGrid to compare present conditions with past trends. This combination supports reliable, scalable, and cost-effective monitoring of anthropogenic anomalies over large areas.

💧 EU Space for Water

We address the Tracking and Preventing Water Pollution challenge by detecting early signs of human-induced disturbances near rivers and floodplains, such as turbidity changes, sediment increase, illegal excavation, and land degradation.

WaterGrid helps protect water resources by enabling early warning, improving pollution monitoring, and supporting faster, data-driven decisions for environmental authorities.
