  • Challenge #3: Disaster risk monitoring

Description

💎 Idea: The Netherlands faces a crisis, 60% of its land is under flood risk, but 54% of its land is dedicated to agriculture - a sector vital for food security but a primary source of aquatic pollution. Current policy-making lacks a high-fidelity "bridge" between rigid regulations and farm-level reality, leading to high inspection costs (millions of euros) and inaccurate risk assessments for insurers.

The Solution: Our solution is end-to-end, consisting of 3 key stages; forecasting model map, risk assesser, mitigation planner.

1. the forecasting model uses Copernicus data and EFAS future measurements, overlays it with farm lands near bodies of water, and assigns a flooding score based on the damage severity.

2. the risk assessor highlights the economical, environmental, and human damage.

3. the mitigation planner utilizes the local soil texture map to locate nearby land to act as floodplains and measure their absorption capacity. Additionally, it uses the local soil and climate to suggest vegetation to plant, to reduce the damage of future floods.

The solution targets a wide selection of audiences with the offering of different subscription types:
- civilians
- businesses
- commercial and institutes
- governmental

🛰️ EU space technologies: Our platform leverages the Copernicus Constellation to provide scalable, non-invasive monitoring:

  • Sentinel-2 (Optical): We utilize multi-spectral imagery to calculate Water, Crop, and Soil Indices (e.g., NDVI, NDWI), identifying early signs of eutrophication and crop stress.

  • Sentinel-1 (Radar): Provides all-weather flood mapping and soil moisture levels, critical for modeling manure runoff risks during heavy rain.

  • Sentinel-3 (Thermal): Monitors water temperature and quality shifts to track the impact of farm runoff on aquatic life.

  • Copernicus EMSR520 + PDOC: We integrate Emergency Management Service data for rapid post-flood damage quantification and remediation cost assessment.

  • Open maps that use aerial data such as Openstreetmaps

Value Add: These technologies provide the "objective truth" needed to lower insurance premiums and government oversight costs simultaneously.
