Description

💎 Idea

AquaLeaks AI is an intelligent satellite analytics platform designed to solve the critical problem of delayed detection in water pollution incidents. Currently, oil spills and toxic waste dumping in remote rivers or lakes often go unnoticed for days, causing irreversible ecological damage. Our solution uses automated multi-temporal satellite image processing to identify and visualize these spills in real-time. By providing an interactive 'Before & After' comparison tool, we empower environmental agencies to act immediately, significantly reducing the impact of industrial accidents on our water resources.

🛰️ EU space technologies

Our platform is built upon the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission data, accessed via the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem (CDSE). We specifically utilize Sentinel-2 L2A (Level-2A) imagery for its high spectral resolution and atmospheric correction. By processing specific spectral bands (Green and Near-Infrared), we calculate the NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index) to accurately map water bodies and detect anomalies in surface reflectivity caused by pollutants like oil slicks or chemical tailings. This space-borne data brings unique value by providing a wide-area, cost-effective surveillance method that is impossible to achieve with ground-based sensors alone.

EU Space for Water

We are solving the challenge of Monitoring and protecting water quality. Our project contributes to the management of water resources by creating a digital 'early warning system' for pollution. By visualizing the exact boundary and surface area of contamination, we help authorities optimize cleanup operations and hold polluters accountable. This contributes directly to the EU’s goal of achieving a 'zero pollution' environment and ensures that critical water resources remain safe for both ecosystems and human consumption.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Team

Our team consists of 4 ambitious students from the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers (UPT):

  • Dima (Backend Developer): Expert in Python and API integration, responsible for the Sentinel Hub connection and data processing.

  • Stefan (Frontend Developer): Specialized in React and UI/UX, built the interactive dashboard and the 'Before & After' comparison slider.

  • Endre (Data Scientist): Focused on spectral analysis and Evalscript optimization for NDWI and anomaly detection.

  • Serban (Project Manager & Designer): Responsible for the pitch deck, business logic, and the AquaLeaks AI visual identity.
