The Problem: Climate change is driving extreme precipitation, but flooding doesn't start only when rivers overflow; it begins when the soil can no longer absorb water. These "invisible floods" (groundwater flooding and waterlogging) destroy crops through root anoxia, causing massive financial losses before the water is even visible on the surface. Current systems are purely reactive, evaluating damage only after the disaster strikes.
Our Solution: FloodWise shifts the paradigm from reactive observation to proactive prevention. Our platform is an AI-powered Early Warning System that constantly monitors soil saturation levels. By fusing underground moisture data with weather forecasts and topography, FloodWise predicts flash flood and waterlogging risks 24-48 hours in advance. Furthermore, our algorithm translates this physical risk into a real-time economic impact calculator, giving farmers and authorities the crucial lead time needed for adaptation actions (e.g., activating drainage pumps, safely evacuating machinery).
Copernicus Sentinel-1 (SAR) - The core of our platform. We leverage radar data to measure the dielectric properties of the soil and calculate the Soil Saturation Index (SSI), piercing through clouds and vegetation to detect when the soil "sponge" is full.
Copernicus Climate Data (ERA5): We correlate real-time soil saturation with high-resolution precipitation forecasts to trigger our AI alerts.
Copernicus CORINE Land Cover & DEM: We apply masking filters to isolate our algorithms strictly to agricultural land (Class 2) and utilize the Digital Elevation Model to calculate water runoff dynamics (HAND - Height Above Nearest Drainage).
EU Space for Water
Our project directly addresses Challenge 3: Disaster Risk Monitoring / Adapting to Extreme Weather. FloodWise contributes to protecting our water resources by shifting the focus from crisis management to risk management. By proactively monitoring the saturation of river basins at the parcel level, we empower rural communities to better manage water retention and drainage infrastructure. Ultimately, we reduce the economic vulnerability of the agricultural sector in the face of rapid floods and alternating droughts.
