Tourism is growing rapdily, and so are the emissions related to it. More than half of the emissions related to travel are from transportation. Travelling locally with long/short distance train or public transport would save emissions by approximately 80% compared to air travel. Therefore, with 'Smart Travel' we aim to solve this problem by proividing recommendations to places which are quite similar in landscape and also accessible with sustainable travel options in comparision to the user's desired locations.

We have used Sentinel-2 satellite data for classifying the Land-use Land-Cover of the target destination and LIDAR data to identify the elevation of the location.

Which of the 3 challenges are you solving (finding sustainable destinations, experiencing cities and cultures or exploring nature with care), and how does this make tourism more sustainable and digital?

We are focusing to solve challenges in finding sustainable destinations. Our solution assists the user in finding locations which will be quite similar to their desired vacation destinantion. But the icing on the cake will be, those destinations could be experienced with way lesser emissions. This not only solves the problem of high footprint related to travel, but also supports local communities, contributes to the EU economy and saves money for a similar holiday experience.

Jainy Shah: She is a climate consultant and specializes on the topic of sustainability and climate mitigation. She is responsible for the research and sustainability aspects of the project.

Mihir Rambhia: He is pursing his PhD in the area of smart and sustainable cities. He is experienced in analyzing spatial data for making informed decision.

Mahir Bhatt: He works as a research assistant to analyse public health data and is passionate to study the environmental impact on public health. With his previous knowledge in management he helps the team with business development aspects.
