💎 Idea

Avalanches cause around 100 deaths yearly in Europe, and 12% of backcountry skiers experience at least one avalanche in their lifetime. Current avalanche forecasts are too general, lack real-time data, and fail to predict sudden changes in snow conditions. Our solution is an avalanche safety app for backcountry skiers that provides real-time, location-specific avalanche risk maps using satellite data and machine learning. The app increases skier safety by predicting dangerous zones, displaying snow properties, and giving live updates during trips.

🛰️ EU space technologies

We use Sentinel-1 (SAR) and Sentinel-2 (MSI) satellite data to analyze:

• Snow depth, density, type, and grain size

• Topographic changes linked to snow instability

Machine learning models process these datasets to generate avalanche risk maps that evolve with new satellite passes and weather inputs, improving forecast precision and prevention.

We address the “EU Space for Consumer Experience” challenge by enhancing outdoor safety and increasing confidence for European skiers and mountaineers. Our app makes space data accessible to consumers through a simple interface, giving them personalized avalanche alerts, predictive route safety analysis, and live snow insights—turning complex satellite information into practical, life-saving guidance.
