Description

During trail and race events, families and friends often find it difficult to track athletes in real time. At the same time, athletes lack access to live environmental insights, such as elevation or weather conditions, that can affect their performance.

TrailRadar addresses these challenges with a real-time tracking and AR visualization platform. Spectators can follow athletes live on a map and friends participating in the race can simply open the AR camera view to see where their friends are on the trail. They are able to follow their favorite competitors and directly support and cheer them on.

For athletes, upcoming versions of the app will include detailed performance analytics, along with insights and live weather updates to help them adjust strategies dynamically and improve endurance.

TrailRadar uses Galileo GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) for precise athlete positioning. Future integrations include the Copernicus Digital Elevation Model (DEM) to support accurate line-of-sight mapping in AR mode, and Sentinel Earth observation data to visualize live weather conditions such as temperature, wind speed, and cloud cover directly within the app.

These technologies bring high positional accuracy, realistic terrain awareness. This ensure the maps and positions are both precise and accurate. This ensures an immersive experience for both athletes and spectators.

We are addressing Challenge #2 – Space-Powered Performance Transforming Sports.

TrailRadar leverages Galileo for precision tracking and Copernicus data for terrain-aware analytics, while transforming fan engagement through AR-based live visualizations.

By combining real-time GNSS accuracy, elevation mapping, and satellite-driven weather insights, TrailRadar turns traditional races into interactive, experiences that connect athletes and audiences in a whole new way.

Team

Our team brings together diverse expertise to make SportRadar a reality:

  • Leo – A Geoinformatics specialist studying at the University of Helsinki and working at the Finnish Geospatial Research Institute. He is the lead programmer, focusing on integrating geospatial data and satellite information into the app.

  • Erik – A Human–Computer Interaction Design student at Aalto University, responsible for the user experience and interface design of the app, ensuring it is both intuitive and engaging.

  • Pranish – A Data Science student with a minor in Business studying in Aalto University, leading the market research and business model development, ensuring the product aligns with user needs and market opportunities.

  • Saad – A Computational Engineering student at Aalto University, contributing to the pitch development and focusing on the technical optimization and performance efficiency of the app.

The final Road Map Includes:

  • Working prototype Ready
  • In 2 months - First Live event
  • In 6 months - Mobile App for Athletes
  • In 12 months - Aiming for 100 events a month
  • In 5 years - covering 25% of the Races

We also spoke to the Aalto Running Club (ARC) in Aalto University Finland who are interested to try out our solution.
