Description

Idea

The mobile application provides a general map, especially a tourist map, for planning a safe route. The application provides a display of the current location and navigation, detects the current weather and the last known data from Earth observation. It will also display other available information about important points around the route. In an emergency situation, when the traveler is unable to communicate and call for help, he can use an external SOS station to call for help via satellite. The locations of SOS stations are on the map. Other travelers near the location of the SOS signal will see highlighted location on the map in their app.

Project aim

Develop mobile application for planning a safe route with map, navigation, Earth observation data and emergency satellite call.

  • Initial TRL: 3 - technology concept with experimental evidence
  • Hackathon TRL: 4 - functional prototype & proof of technological concept in laboratory
  • Early startup TRL: 5 - technology demonstrated in test environment
  • Target startup TRL: 8 - final tested/certified product
  • Target business TRL: 9 - final product in real environment

Problem

A hiker needs to find out a lot of different information to plan a route safely, while the conditions may change during the trip or an emergency situation may arise and he will need help.

Solution

Obviously, an ordinary traveler has a mobile phone with him. Therefore, a mobile application is a suitable solution. The application offers a map, navigation, weather information, Earth observation information and other relevant information. An external SOS station with satellite communication sends an emergency call to rescuers and to the map of other travelers in the proximity.

Unique value

All in one solution for personalized and safe travel. Integrated map, navigation with Earth observation data, which are selected according to the user profile and according to the location. Added value for users with specific needs, e.g. an asthmatic looking for a health-friendly environment. Data mining on anonymized users that generates a new business ecosystem - to enable travel providers to enhance their services. And finally public service SOS stations in the country - sustainable and environmentally consious solution.

Hackathon challenge

3. Beyond horizons - redefining travel with space innovation

Innovation

Used technologies relevant to hackathon challenge:

  1. Map source: mapy.com (originally openstreetmap.org or freemap.sk)
  2. Navigation: GNSS including Galileo
  3. Earth observation data: Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem API (Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3)
  4. Source for data and weather: Open-Meteo API (open-meteo.com)
  5. Satellite communication: Kinéis kit.

Customer segment

Application users: general travelers, profiled travelers, experienced hikers. Buyers: trevelers, insurance companies, travel agencies, rescuers, national parks authorities.

Business model

Freemium:

  • B2C free segment - general anonymous user
  • B2C premium segment - registered user with created profile and a monthly subscription fee
  • B2B segment - commission from accident and mountain insurance subcontract and commission from travel agencies
  • B2G segment - contribution from national park authorities or local government/authority

Cost

  • 8 MD x 5 days per month
  • hardware for SOS stations (Kinéis kit, Arduino, electronic components, 3D printer & material)
  • administrative fees
  • accounting & legal service
  • office

Revenue

  • €9 monthly subscription fee (differentiated according selected categories in a user profile)
  • license fee for provided data and managing for Kinéis emergency stations for national park authority & local government authority

Future plan

Add features to application, new versions. Trail of incidents on users' routes. Long-term anonymized data statistics. Data mining for application ecosystem, insurance companies contracts, travel agencies contracts, national park authority or local government/authority contracts.
