💎 Idea
Our goal is to make choosing the right beach for relaxation easier. Currently, there is no precise tool for measuring beach crowding, and vacationers often rely on subjective opinions from various, not always reliable, sources. To address this issue, we created an application that monitors real-time crowd density on beaches using satellite data. The app also provides up-to-date weather information for each beach and alerts users to the presence of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). Additionally, it allows users to find nearby dining options close to the beach.
🛰️ EU space technologies
Our solution uses satellite data from the Copernicus program to assess the presence of cyanobacteria. To detect beach crowding, it relies on commercial satellite imagery providers that offer high spatial and temporal resolution data to ensure real-time accuracy. Weather data for beaches is obtained from weather services that provide API access to their datasets.
🌍 Link with the challenges
We address the challenge of “Enhancing outdoor and travel experiences through space data”. By merging Copernicus and other sources of imagerywith weather information, our app provides users with personalised recommendations for the best beach to choose for relaxing.
