Idea
Voyages to Antarctica and the work of scientists there remain almost completely invisible to the general public: expeditions are carried out far from civilization, they are difficult to follow in real time, and information reaches people only after their completion, often in the form of static photos or dry scientific reports. There is no accessible, interactive and emotionally impactful way for the public to observe the path of the ship, the conditions on board and the scientific activity itself, and the available satellite data on climate change and melting glaciers remain difficult to understand and practically incomprehensible to students, citizens and non-specialists. This creates a gap between science and people: the technologies exist, the research is happening, but the public does not see them and cannot feel their significance.
EU Space Technologies
The ship's position is tracked using precise Galileo navigation data, supplemented by EGNOS for minimal movement error, and up-to-date Copernicus satellite observations are superimposed on the route - such as ocean temperature, glacier status, existing spills, terrain changes and sea current dynamics.
EU Space for Consumer Experience
With this app we are solving Challenge #3, because we allow any person – schoolchild, student or interested citizen – to “travel” to Antarctica in real time. 360° cameras are placed on board the research ship and in the Antarctic base itself, which broadcast a live image and allow the user to look around freely, as if they were physically there, with the addition of informing the public of interesting facts and ecological information
