In many urban areas, sports fields and play spaces are under pressure: poorly mapped, under-maintained, or simply unknown to the communities who need them. People want to be more active and connected, but often don’t know where to go, especially newcomers, youth, and underrepresented groups. Cities, on the other hand, often lack real-time, data-driven insights into how existing infrastructure is used or where new spaces are most needed.
In a world of algorithmic filter bubbles and digital isolation, physical play and movement is more important than ever.
Mission
Prototype that combines:
Mapping of public or semi-public sports/play spaces (Soccer, Calisthenics/Streetworkout, running tracks, but not limited to it)
Focus on population density based distribution of sports places
Use of Copernicus Earth Observation data to support discovery, planning, and analysis
The ultimate goal: a scalable tool that helps people get better access to local places to play, while cities and communities get insights into where new investments could have the most impact.
The Build
A map of accessible sports areas, using satellite + open local data
A heatmap of high-potential locations
A feedback loop for city planners, local sports groups, or NGOs to use the tool for advocacy and decision-making
local. real-world. whole-world.
Use of EU Space Tech
Copernicus EO Data: Identify sports areas and suitable rooftops.
Combine with: OpenStreetMap, Population Density Visualization by Copernicus, Copernicus, Sentinel-2 Mosaik, Sentinel-2 L2A multispectral imagery (10m resolution), Copernicus Digital, Elevation Model (DEM) Sentinel-2, Liegenschaftskataster Berlin, income Data, demographic Data
Why it Matters
Promotes health, inclusion, and social cohesion
Empowers people to play and connect IRL
Helps cities make smarter, space-saving, data-driven infrastructure decisions
What’s Next?
Our prototype may be presented to:
Local governments, planning departments and sports scientists
NGOs like Common Goal, Reclaim the Game, or urban sport initiatives
European civic tech and innovation programs
Brands and associations like Nike, Adidas, UEFA, DFB.
A project with real impact for municipalities across Europe, for a large variety of sports.
