Many travellers today want not just to visit places, but to have meaningful experiences that are personalised, safe, and sustainable. However: They often lack realtime environmental and terrain data to make informed choices (e.g., weather, remote terrain, hazard zones).
Travel providers have limited use of satellite-derived data to enhance experiences (e.g., immersive tours, AR overlays, location-based insights).
Sustainability is a growing concern: travellers want to minimise impact but don’t have tools to compare options.
Proposed solution:
Develop a mobile app “TerraVoyager” that:
Uses Galileo GNSS for precise user location and context.
Uses Copernicus satellite imagery + data (terrain, land use, vegetation, water bodies) to overlay immersive travel insights.
Provides a personalised itinerary or route suggestion that factors in sustainability metrics (e.g., off-peak routes, less crowded areas).
Offers augmented-reality or interactive map features that show hidden storytelling: e.g., historic terrain changes, environmental vulnerability, local biodiversity.
Includes “safety & terrain awareness” mode: traveller sees potential hazard zones (based on terrain slope, vegetation dryness, weather patterns) before choosing a hike or excursion.
Data sources:
Copernicus Open Access Hub (for satellite imagery & land-use data)
Galileo GNSS (for positioning)
Possibly EGNOS for augmentation and more positioning accuracy.
