5 Inspiring hackathon project ideas for 2026

Winning a hackathon is hard, and you already know it.

We've shared the tips that improve your odds, but none of them matter if the idea is wrong. The idea is what juries remember, and in 2026 it's also the thing that separates a demo they scroll past from a project that gets you hired, funded, or acquired.

Most "hackathon ideas" articles hand you a generic list someone invented at a desk. This one doesn't. Every project below actually won a hackathon on TAIKAI. Real teams, real events, real judges. We'll show you what each one built, why it won, and the lesson you can carry into your own project, whether you're hacking for the first time or you've got a shelf of finalist badges already.

One thing has changed since we first wrote this piece, and it's worth saying up front.

AI is no longer the differentiator. It's the baseline.

Judges have now seen a hundred projects that bolt a chatbot onto an app and call it innovation. That doesn't win anymore.

What wins in 2026 is AI used to solve a specific, real problem: an agent that completes a multi-step task on its own, a model that runs where it isn't supposed to be able to run, a system that connects tools nobody had connected before. The theme matters too. Climate, healthcare, accessibility, and financial inclusion are weighted heavily by most organizers, so a technically simpler project that nails an impact theme often beats a flashier one that ignores it.

Keep that in mind as you read. The recent winners below all pass the same test: the AI is the point, not the garnish.

Recent winning projects (2026)

These four came out of TAIKAI hackathons in the last year. Three of them were built in a single day.

1. docX: a private medical scribe that runs on a €150 box

The event: AI Hacker House, Solstice Edition, a one-day, in-person build sprint in Porto.

Doctors spend half of every appointment typing instead of looking at the patient. José Pedro Sousa built docX to fix that. It's a small box that sits in the consultation room, listens to the visit, transcribes it live, fills in the clinical form, and drafts the SOAP note.

Then it does two things dictation software doesn't. It suggests diagnoses worth considering, and it flags questions the doctor didn't ask. In one test run it caught that nobody had checked for allergies before an antibiotic was about to be prescribed.

The part that won it: where it runs. The whole thing lives on a Raspberry Pi 5 with a Hailo AI accelerator, speech recognition running on the CPU and a Qwen3 model on the NPU. Hardware cost, around 150 euros. No cloud, no API bill, and the audio is deleted the second it becomes text. In medicine, a recording that never leaves the room is an easy thing to explain to a patient.

The lesson: constraints are a feature. "Fully local, on cheap hardware, privacy by design" is a stronger pitch than "we called an AI API." Pick a hard requirement your problem actually has, and make it the center of the project.

2. Sonder: buying a home that fits who you are

The event: AI Hacker House, Solstice Edition, Porto.

Tiago Pacheco, Leandro Leite, and Rafael Santos took on property search, which almost every portal treats as a spreadsheet filter: price, bedrooms, location, done. Sonder starts from the person instead. It's built to understand what you need and how you feel about a place, then find the home that fits, not just the one that matches a checkbox.

The lesson: a crowded category is not a closed one. Property search looks solved until someone reframes the problem around the human instead of the filter. Judges reward a fresh angle on a familiar problem more than a novel problem nobody has.

3. Wingman: one workspace for the founder drowning in tabs

The event: AI Hacker House, Solstice Edition, Porto.

Entrepreneurs and freelancers live across a dozen tools at once. Bruno Moreira and Ricardo Ramos built Wingman to pull them into one place. It connects to Gmail, Google Calendar, ClickUp, and WhatsApp, reads the whole picture, then builds the ideal daily plan, surfaces messages you haven't answered, recommends the next action, and drafts context-aware replies.

It was built end to end in Lovable with custom API connections, which is its own 2026 lesson: a small team can ship a real agentic product in a day now.

The lesson: this is agentic AI done right. It doesn't just answer questions, it looks across your tools and acts. If your project can take a real action on the user's behalf instead of returning text, you're building what juries want to see this year.

4. Six Degrees of the World Cup: correctness as the killer feature

The event: AI Agent Hackathon, The Squad Graph.

The brief: connect every player at the 2026 World Cup through the club dressing rooms they've shared. The winning project turned it into a tool that finds the shortest teammate chain between any two of the 1,248 players, every hop labeled with the exact club and season so you can check it yourself.

Under the hood it's an 11,035-edge graph, joined strictly on club identifiers rather than names to avoid inventing false connections, with a test suite that independently re-derives the whole thing and proves it's right.

The lesson: when accuracy is the job, make accuracy visible. This project let judges verify every edge in one click, and that trust is what put it first. Here's a fun fact: this project was entirely built by Claude Fable 5 model, and part of an LLM-exclusive hackathon. This means that the participants were LLM models, provided with the same set of instructions. If your curious with the results, here's the full report.

Timeless winners: patterns that still hold

Not every great hackathon idea has an expiry date. These two are older, but the reason they won is exactly as true in 2026 as it was then.

AI and satellite data for safer Arctic routes

The challenge: CASSINI Hackathon, where more than 570 participants worked on solutions to protect the Arctic region.

The PolarBearings team built an AI-based navigation platform that gives optimal routing for land vehicles in the Arctic. As temperatures rise, the frozen lakes and ice roads that communities depend on are getting dangerous. The team combined a machine learning data platform with satellite data for real-time ice safety predictions.

We asked Thomas Metcalfe from the team how they landed on the idea:

“At first it was all market research. There wasn’t any advantage in building solutions without fully understanding the problem faced in the region. So, we all did independent research and shared our findings in Discord. Over time, some problems gained our interest more than others - at this point, we began considering solutions. We had maybe 2 or 3 meetings where we began pitching potential ideas, and through our discussions (and advice from the experts), we slowly eliminated ideas until we arrived at the one we were most confident in.”

Why it still wins: AI plus satellite data plus a real climate problem is more relevant now, not less. But notice the ideation story, because that's the transferable part. They researched the problem before they touched a solution. That order is the whole game.

A digital sticker that beat a full system rebuild

The challenge: Tickethon, run by Wiener Linien, the operator behind roughly 180 of Vienna's underground, tram, and bus lines. The goal was faster ticket issuing and validation.

The "Quicker with a Sticker" project used Bluetooth Low Energy beacons and QR codes to build a digital sticker validation system. When a passenger's app detects a beacon, it verifies the ticket in the background and shows an animated sticker the inspector can check at a glance. Faster for everyone, shorter queues, no overhauled infrastructure.

Why it still wins: they solved the problem without redesigning the world around it. When you can hit the goal by adding one clever layer instead of rebuilding the whole system, do that. Juries reward projects that could actually ship on Monday.

What juries are scoring in 2026

If you strip away the themes, strong hackathon projects tend to score on five things. Aim to nail at least three:

  • Creativity. A fresh angle on the problem, not a clone of an existing app.
  • Usability. A judge should get what it does in the first 60 seconds of the demo.
  • Technical fit. The tech matches the problem. AI because the problem needs AI, not because AI is trendy.
  • Growth path. There's a believable route from prototype to real product.
  • Impact or business value. It helps real people, or it makes real money, and you can say which.

A tip that costs nothing: if your demo leans on a commercial AI API, have a cached response ready in case you hit a rate limit mid-pitch. Nothing kills momentum like a spinning loader in front of the judges.

Before you commit, ask yourself these questions

When you start a challenge, run the idea past these with your team:

  • Does it align with the hackathon's objectives?
  • Can you build every feature, or should you focus on a minimum viable product?
  • Will a proof of concept show the jury the core value?
  • Could this run in the real world, on real cost, time, and management?
  • Are you using the technologies and assets the organizer is providing?

These clear your head, structure the idea, and kill the ones that don't fit the rules before you waste a weekend on them.
