<h2>📍 Nonprofits</h2> Three different nonprofits and their specific needs will be proposed as hackathon challenges, and teams can select one. Each challenge can have up to five teams competing.  Here are some information about the nonprofits and their current needs that will be addressed by developing OutSystems app that will make a difference: <h3>Nelson Mandela University Center for Community Technology (South Africa 🇿🇦)</h3> Our work is focused on the development of human potential and wellbeing, particularly in disadvantaged, vulnerable, and deep rural communities. Our tool towards achieving this is needs-driven smart technology,” says Professor Darelle van Greunen, Director of the Centre for Community Technologies (CCT) at Nelson Mandela University, describing their work. The CCT was established by van Greunen in 2014 to focus on information and communications technology (ICT) solutions that can play a catalytic role in solving everyday problems for people living in remote, financially stressed and under-serviced communities. Technology, and more specifically mobile technology, is playing a key and rapidly increasing role in facilitating community-level knowledge, health, connectivity, economic opportunities, access to infrastructure and services, and management of natural resources. The role of the CCT is to use technology and innovation to contribute to a more prosperous and inclusive society, to accelerate inclusive economic growth, and improve people’s everyday lives. The CCT engages with community members, particularly in South African townships and rural areas, to codesign technology solutions for everyday challenges in these communities so that technology becomes an enabler in their lives.  The CCT integrates transdisciplinary research and innovation with community engagement through the development and implementation of apps and other smart technologies that enable the advancement of education, health, rural and social development, particularly in low income communities. This is combined with training, networking, and policy analysis and advice. The CCT, which is part of the Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology, is the only research unit at a South African university that specifically focuses on ICT solutions for Africa, by Africans, in Africa. <a href="https://cct.mandela.ac.za/" target="_blank">Webpage here</a> <h3>Strength United (Los Angeles, CA, USA 🇺🇸) </h3> We provide strength-based prevention and client-centered intervention services to survivors of all ages who have experienced child maltreatment, domestic violence, and sexual assault. StrengthUnited, a chartered center of California State University, Northridge (CSUN), has served the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys for over 30 years, supporting the most vulnerable members of our community at critical moments in their lives and providing prevention, intervention, and education in our community to address violence and abuse at the root. We help children, adults, and families live abuse-free lives.  Consequences of violence and trauma can include physical injury and other medical problems; mental health issues including PTSD, depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts; lost work productivity; loss of housing and financial security; long-term health consequences, and poor educational outcomes..  Through a groundbreaking multidisciplinary approach, StrengthUnited serves thousands of children and adults annually, free of charge. We provide 24/7 confidential support and response and help survivors of violence and abuse navigate the often-confusing array of different jurisdictions, departments, and service providers. StrengthUnited brings service partners including law enforcement, medical professionals, counselors, legal aid, and others together in one location, creating an experience that favors the needs of the survivor, rather than leaving them to navigate an often-hostile system alone. In 2019:<ul><li>more than 2,000 children and nearly 2,700 adults received direct services, including 262 families and more than 300 Foster Youth;</li><li>our hotline team responded to 1,100 emergency calls, and;</li><li>our Prevention and Education services team impacted nearly 45,000 individuals. <ul><li style="margin-left:20px">Prevention and Education efforts include community mobilization throughout the region, youth leadership development, and a wide variety of trainings and workshops, as well as CSUN’s Campus Care Advocates geared toward sexual violence on the university campus. Our specialized programs also address the needs of LGBTQIA+ Survivors and we provide resources in a variety of languages.</li></ul></li></ul><a href="https://www.csun.edu/eisner-education/strength-united" target="_blank">Webpage here</a> <h3>Zer0Hunger (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) </h3> Zer0Hunger is a platform created to systematically address hunger in Malaysia. Zer0Hunger is a social enterprise which was created to help try to solve the hunger problem by creating a platform to ride on existing commercial supply chains to fulfil relief operations especially with regards to food. This platform has two verticals (modules), one module to deliver food directly to vulnerable and a second module advocating for urban farming to create more sustainable outcomes for vulnerable.  <a href="https://www.zer0hunger.org/" target="_blank">Webpage here</a>

After five weeks, during which the participants put their skills and hearts into their projects, the 15 teams finally unveiled their solutions. But only three were named the big winners.<h2> </h2><h2>  Food Delivery Platform for Zer0hunger</h2><img src="https://taikai.azureedge.net/GTFP0zmztyG3S7eDPC_4LuTkrquztUg3_yCXlAg1ktk/rs:fit:800:0:0/aHR0cHM6Ly9zdG9yYWdlLmdvb2dsZWFwaXMuY29tL3RhaWthaS1zdG9yYWdlL2ltYWdlcy9hYzliY2JhMC03ODQ1LTExZWItOWQ4Ny00YjE4MTZiMTNjMTZXaW5uZXIgemVyMGh1bmdlciAtIFBob2VuaXhEWC5wbmc" style="width:350px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" />Zer0hunger had a big challenge on their hands: they needed an efficient way to deliver food to those that needed it the most in Malaysia.  The team PhoenixDX Champions, from Australia, proposed a solution that would connect people that wanted to help those that needed help in a very direct and easy way -- and they succeeded.  PhoenixDX Champions focused their user experience on speed to enable a faster response to applicants. The solution called Digital Samaritan will allow Zer0hunger to scale their support without increasing their costs by raising donations, supporting more people in need, optimizing the logistics behind the whole process of food delivery, and decreasing the time needed to get to those requesting help.  Once in production, Digital Samaritan will work on both desktop and mobile versions, have multi-language support and integration with Facebook login. Integration with maps will show places where there are people in need and trigger the closest partners (non-governmental organizations) who can deliver the food to them. Apart from users and partners, the app is also designed to be accessed by donors and anyone that chooses to donate to this cause.  <h2> </h2><h2>  App to Support Cancer Patients for Center for Community Technologies  </h2><img src="https://taikai.azureedge.net/oBOYx7PfqT3TtfeRiSj4FtunKlJ6s4kZsn7BQZCSru0/rs:fit:800:0:0/aHR0cHM6Ly9zdG9yYWdlLmdvb2dsZWFwaXMuY29tL3RhaWthaS1zdG9yYWdlL2ltYWdlcy9mMDNkN2M1MC03ODQ1LTExZWItYmFlNS1iMTdkODU1MTZjMzJXaW5uZXJzIENDVCAtIEV2ZXJpcy5wbmc" style="width:350px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" />Cancer is a major concern worldwide, and South Africa is no exception. Yet, people from rural regions tend to ignore the already existing information and focus on the common fears and stigma prevalent across communities. That’s the problem the Center for Community Technologies brought to the Hackathon.  To solve it, the Everis Social Reload team focused on building an app that would:<ul style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-inline-start:48px"><li style="list-style-type:disc;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre">Clarify and inform about cancer</li><li style="list-style-type:disc;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre">Increase awareness</li><li style="list-style-type:disc;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre">Encourage the adoption of preventive behaviours and early diagnosis</li><li style="list-style-type:disc;font-size:11pt;font-family:Calibri,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre">Help cope with the disease the best way possible</li></ul> Everis built a very visual, intuitive, and easy to understand user interface using gamification components: as the users go through the app journey and increase their awareness, a flower grows and blooms.  To make sure the app could also reach rural communities that don’t have the same access to the Internet as the urban areas, and given the language diversity of the country, the team included offline capabilities, multi-language options, and text-to-speech features.  The app also includes animated components that exemplify how users can examine their bodies and search for tangible symptoms. <h2> </h2><h2>    App to Help Survivors of Domestic Violence for Strength United</h2> <img src="https://taikai.azureedge.net/jO_dQ55OnUhL_QEtvv6NjOsfkfuqbKziVhIua9lg44Y/rs:fit:800:0:0/aHR0cHM6Ly9zdG9yYWdlLmdvb2dsZWFwaXMuY29tL3RhaWthaS1zdG9yYWdlL2ltYWdlcy8zZDU3MmZlMC03ODQ2LTExZWItYmFlNS1iMTdkODU1MTZjMzJXaW5uZXIgU3RyZW5ndGggVW5pdGVkIC0gRHJha2thci5wbmc" style="width:350px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" />Focused on supporting people of all ages that have been victims of child maltreatment, domestic violence, and sexual assault, Strength United was looking for a solution that would help them reach and connect with the community members that need their support.  The Drakkar PayItBack team proposed a solution to help survivors of domestic and peer violence reach out for help easily and safely. The team developed an app to be used by different stakeholders: victims can request help for themselves, but third-parties can also request help if they know someone that might be in danger.   The app operates with many useful resources like news and events where victims of violence can get the support and help they need. In the back office, the app also provides a great experience for volunteers who want to support Strength United and the survivors, and an easy management of applications and candidate screening.  Last but not least, users are able to use a chat feature and get directly in touch with the Strength United phone line (open 24/7) in case it is not safe for them to call. Also, the app has a distinctive panic button and quick exit in case it’s needed.  Drakkar’s solution is carefully thought out and provides just the right information and features in order to support and provide easy ways to help without being intrusive.  <h3>Honorable Mentions </h3>There were several other incredible projects developed during these five weeks. The OutSystems Build for the Future Hackathon is a partnership with our developer community to create a set of applications that will help a small group of nonprofits more easily deliver services to those in need. The goal of the hackathon will be to develop applications for nonprofit organizations selected by OutSystems. <h2>📖&nbsp; RULES</h2> <h3>1. Who can participate?&nbsp;</h3> Participation is limited to 15 teams, five teams for each of the three nonprofit organizations. Teams should be composed by members of the same OutSystems partner or customer organization. We recommend building a diverse team that covers a wide spectrum of skills - developer, tech lead, UX/UI designer, and product owner. However, teams are free to choose any other combination. We encourage participants to build diverse teams that take into account gender, region, skill levels, seniority, and more. In our experience, team diversity has many benefits, especially in a hackathon. Teams will also have the option to add a sixth member to the group. This team member will be a recent graduate of the OutSystems Developer School, will have just completed their certification, and have at least two years of experience as a professional developer. This opportunity will give them real-life experience developing with OutSystems. Team Selection</h3> Once registration is closed, teams will be informed whether they are selected. Only valid registrations will be considered. Selection will be based upon two factors:&nbsp;<ol><li>Capacity: &nbsp;When we reach the goal of 15 teams, all the other registrations will be on a waiting list.&nbsp;</li><li>In case of excess enrollment, more than 15 teams, (in case one organization has more than one team registered) we will distribute a maximum number of teams per partner/customer and the teams will be selected upon the speed of registration (first come first served).</li></ol> <h3>4. Challenge Selection&nbsp;</h3> Teams will be able to choose one of three different challenges. Each challenge is connected with a nonprofit and their specific use case. Nonprofits are from different regions; therefore, teams can choose their challenge according to their preferred nonprofit cause, challenge specifics, or geographical proximity. Challenge Process</h3> Registration for the hackathon will be open from December 3, 2020, until January 10, 2021.&nbsp; Live Hackathon Kick-off is scheduled for January 18, 2021, and all participants are invited to join. Apart from the introductions, this will be an opportunity for the nonprofits to present their challenges and requirements for the solution. Make sure at least one of your team members attends.&nbsp; Hackathon Mechanics The hackathon will consist of 5 sprints (0-4) of approximately 1 week each:Sprint 0 is reserved for an ideation phase.During this week the teams will be able to connect with the nonprofit institutions and discuss the problems and possible solutions. At the end of Sprints 1, 2, and 3, the teams will present a demo of their progress.There will be a live final presentation at the end of Sprint 4. After the demo of sprint 2, a pre-selection takes place, eliminating 2 of the 5 teams for each institution. Selection process and criteria</h3> The final assessment of the proposed solutions will be done based on these 4 criteria (each having a weight of 25% of the final score):<ol><li>Applicability of the solution<ul><li style="margin-left: 20px;">The fit of the app developed will be assessed by the nonprofit organization&rsquo;s members. This is why it is important to dedicate time at the beginning of the process to get to know them and present a demo after each sprint.&nbsp;</li></ul></li><li>Tech quality&nbsp;<ul><li style="margin-left: 20px;">The quality of the solution based on its technical aspects will be assessed by the OutSystems advocates and members of the product team.&nbsp;</li></ul></li><li>UX/UI quality&nbsp;<ul><li style="margin-left: 20px;">User experience/user interface is an important aspect of each app. OutSystems experts on UX/UI design will assess this feature of the proposed solution.&nbsp;</li></ul></li><li>Demo quality&nbsp;<ul><li style="margin-left: 20px;">The final day of the hackathon will be dedicated to the demo presentations where each team will be able to pitch their solution. The final presentation will be assessed by the journalist from recognised tech publications.&nbsp;</li></ul></li></ol> <h3>8. Intellectual Property, Compliance and Solution implementation</h3> In consideration of your participation in the Hackathon, you agree to license and contribute any and all intellectual property and other proprietary rights in and to the software, code, designs, inventions, ideas, materials, documentation, concepts, workflows and any other items you write, create, develop, provide, contribute or make available in respect of your participation in and to the Hackathon and related activities (&ldquo;Works&rdquo;) to the public (including OutSystems) pursuant to a permissive open source license, such as an MIT- or BSD-style license. You hereby warrant, represent and undertake that (i) the Works are entirely your own work and not the work of any third party, or if the work of any third party or if including the work of a third party, that you have a license or other sufficient rights or permission from the owner to satisfy your obligations hereunder (and have provided any permissions or acknowledgements as required) and (ii) you have the necessary rights (including from any employer or academic institution with which you are associated) to grant the rights and licenses you are granting hereunder and to otherwise comply with these Rules. <h2>🏆 PRIZES</h2> The aim of the hackathon is the social good; therefore, we count on the goodwill and altruism from all parties. That is why we decided to offer prizes that are aligned with this aim, recognizing everyone&#39;s effort and dedication and promoting values of giving back to the community. <h3>Winners</h3> The solution developed by the winning team will be implemented for the nonprofit, and the winning team will have the opportunity to help the nonprofit in its efforts to develop their app throughout the year. This solution and case study will be promoted in the media.&nbsp;Three prizes will be awarded to the winning teams (one per challenge/nonprofit); the winning teams may designate a charity of their choice to receive a donation of $1,500 from OutSystems. This is the opportunity to help two nonprofits make the world a better place. <h3>Other prizes</h3> Each participant in the hackathon will receive a free OutSystems certification voucher, a community badge, and a swag kit.
