Imagine new possibilities for the campus of tomorrow

Note: You need to be a NOVA SBE student or graduate within the last two years to apply

The Digital Experience Lab (DXL) of Nova SBE announces the PULSE project. PULSE is a year-long project that aims to encourage participants to present technological solutions as well as solutions to tech related challenges to improve the quality of life on campus. The objective of PULSE is to empower curious minds to imagine new possibilities for the campus of tomorrow by using state-of-the-art tools and methods, paired with creativity and critical thinking.

PULSE is organized by the Digital Experience Lab of Nova SBE, with support from Schreder-Hyperion, Sonae, Outsystems, and Bright Pixel.

As Lisbon ramps up its efforts to become a tech hub, what is the impact of technology on a small ecosystem like a campus and its community? During the next months the campus of Nova SBE will host PULSE, the Campus Tech Festival, where new ideas will be tested and our understanding of technology will be challenged and advanced.

Headlining PULSE is a student competition on new ideas for the use of technology on campus. Participants are invited to submit and develop ideas for the university of tomorrow. The project is divided into three consecutive stages, leading participants through an entire ideation and prototyping process. At the end, teams will have the opportunity to present their work, and a prize will be awarded to the best three teams.

Participants who want to take part in the project are invited to register their ideas for Phase 1 via the apply button on this website. You can register as an individual or as a team. Teams are highly recommended for the later stages of the competition but if you don’t have a team yet, enter as an individual.

Phase 1: The opportunity seed

During Phase 1 is dedicated to observation, intuition, a need, a desire, a motivation, a (naïve) idea. Students should focus on something they want to address during the project. To be considered for evaluation, teams must hand in the following:

  • Problem definition (what is it that you want to address);
  • Research that supports the argument that the topic addressed is relevant.

The entire Nova SBE Community will be able to vote for their favourite ideas and a jury will award three prizes to the top 3 teams.

The prizes for Phase 1 are:

  1. 150 Euros
  2. 100 Euros
  3. 50 Euros

The top twenty teams will be invited to participate in Phase 2.

Phase 2: The pursuit of knowledge

Phase 2 aims at exploring your topic deeper; understand the problem; talk to people; read reports; check the technology; destroy and scrap what you had in phase 1 and come up with better alternatives; Pick one.

It starts with a training on ideation methods and tools that will enable the teams that passed from phase 1 to better validate their ideas. Ideas will evolve and teams must present their case in terms of desirability, feasibility and viability.

The entire NovaSBE Community will be able to vote for their favourite ideas and a jury will award three prizes to the top 3 teams. A jury will also select max. 10 teams that will be invited to participate in the final prototyping and testing phase.

The prizes of phase 2 are:

  1. 500 Euros
  2. 250 Euros
  3. 100 Euros

Phase 3: The going for action

This last phase is all about making your idea tangible. It starts again with an intense training session on design and prototyping. Experts are invited to share their stories and give support on how to develop your idea into a working prototype that can be showcased and tested during the last week of the Festival of Tech. Teams are expected to develop a prototype during this stage that can be showcased and tested in public. Teams receive feedback and support from the Digital Experience Lab staff during this phase. Feedback is provided regularly to guarantee a successful project.

Opening night and Exhibition:

The project ends with an award ceremony and an exhibition of the works. The entire Nova SBE Community will be able to vote for their favourite ideas and a jury will award three prizes to the top 3 teams.

The prizes are:

  1. 2.000 Euros
  2. 1.000 Euros
  3. 500 Euros

The candidate teams may include 1 to 5 members, in which at least half of them must be Nova SBE students in good standing or graduates of Nova SBE within the last two years (2017, 2018, 2019). We permit individual work, but we encourage interdisciplinary teams of 3-5 members.

Kick-off sessions, trainings, workshops, side events, and the final presentation and exhibition will be held at the Digital Experience Lab of Nova SBE. Address: Digital Experience Lab, Room D 134, Rua Holanda 1, Carcavelos
